Exploring a 100-Year-Old Ancient Pagoda in Nha Trang

Khanh Hoa – the land of agarwood, is renowned for its serene and poetic landscapes. Deeply influenced by Buddhism, the region’s spiritual essence is reflected not only in its breathtaking scenery but also in the way of life of its people. Long Son Pagoda, one of the most significant Buddhist landmarks in Khanh Hoa, is not only a beautiful spiritual site but also a place of great religious importance, playing a crucial role in the Buddhist faith of both the past and present.

1. History of Long Son Pagoda

Long Son Pagoda was originally built on a mountain in 1886 by Venerable Thich Ngo Chi (1856–1935). He was a native of Vinh Xuong District, Khanh Hoa Province, who, in his youth, joined the anti-French resistance movement before later devoting his life to Buddhism.

In 1900 (Year of the Rat – Canh Ty), after a severe storm, the temple was relocated from the mountain to its current location. By 1936, it was chosen as the headquarters of the Khanh Hoa Buddhist Association.

In 1940, the pagoda underwent major renovations, primarily thanks to the efforts of Ton That Quyen (Association President) and Buddhist devotee Vo Dinh Thuy. However, in 1968, the temple suffered severe damage due to war bombings, causing its roof tiles to collapse.

In 1971, Venerable Thich Thien Binh took charge of the restoration project. By 1975, only 60% of the reconstruction had been completed, following the architectural designs of architect Vo Dinh Diep.

2. A Century-Old Pagoda with Distinctive Asian Architecture

Long Son Pagoda in Nha Trang spans an area of over 3,000m², showcasing intricate and meticulously carved Asian-inspired architecture. The temple grounds measure 44.5 meters in width and over 72 meters in length. Adjacent to the pagoda are the lecture halls of Khanh Hoa Buddhist Intermediate School and the headquarters of the Khanh Hoa Buddhist Association.

Inside the main hall, there is a large bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, weighing 700kg and standing 1.6 meters tall. Behind the statue, a large mirror symbolizes the Buddha’s radiant aura, along with a multi-armed statue of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Quan Am Chuan De).

The Great Buddha Statue (Kim Than Phat To) in Nha Trang

To reach the Great Buddha Statue (Kim Than Phat To), visitors must climb 193 stone steps. At the 44th step, you’ll encounter a 17-meter-long and 5-meter-tall reclining Buddha statue, symbolizing Buddha’s entry into Nirvana. Behind it, a relief depicts 49 disciples gathered in prayer. This statue was built in 2003.

Just 5 meters above the reclining Buddha statue, there is a bell tower housing a 2.2-meter-tall, 1,500kg great bronze bell, a gift from Hue’s Buddhist followers in 2002.

The construction of the Great Buddha Statue began in 1964 and was completed in 1965, led by Venerable Thich Duc Minh, the President of the Khanh Hoa Buddhist Association at the time, in collaboration with sculptor Kim Dien. The statue stands 24 meters high, with the Buddha figure itself measuring 14 meters, resting on a 7-meter lotus pedestal with a 10-meter diameter. Surrounding the pedestal are seven statues representing Buddhist martyrs. In front of the platform, a pair of 7.2-meter-long dragon sculptures adds to the temple’s grandeur.
